Peel's Commitment to Algae Research
Our research into Cladophora began in 2002, in response to increasing public concerns about attached algae growth.
Ontario Waterworks Research Consortium
We combined efforts with the Durham, Halton and Niagara regions, in conjunction with the cities of Toronto, Hamilton, and the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA). Together, these member cities and regions formed the Ontario Waterworks Research Consortium (OWWRC).
The group then commissioned University of Waterloo researchers, representatives from the National Water Research Institute and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment to study the factors contributing to increased Cladophora growth.
Research into Causes and Control of Algae
In order to control algae, we need to know what makes it grow. Through its joint research initiative, the OWWRC hopes to determine the causes of Cladophora growth and thus find a permanent and environmentally-sound solution.
Research in 2005 and 2006 will include:
- Determining whether different species of Cladophora have different growth requirements.
- Analysing historical data to better understand how discharges from wastewater treatment plants, rivers and storm sewers contribute to the phosphorus necessary for algae growth.
- Compiling and interpreting data from 2002-2005.
- Making final recommendations for possible management action.
