Below are those lesson plans that are curriculum connected to your Grade. A brief description for each lesson is included. Simply click on the title of the lesson to open up the downloadable PDF. Do note which acronyms appear beside each title; they tell you that curriculum connections are made for certain of these subject areas:

3 Strikes You’re Out Froggy!

Through a role play game, students are introduced to limiting factors that can affect amphibian populations, such as habitat loss and pollution.

Construct a Watershed

By constructing watersheds out of sand, students will observe how water flows from higher elevations to lower elevations, carrying pollutants over the landscape.

Erosion Game

This interactive game incorporates storytelling and drama to illustrate the impacts of deforestation in a watershed.

I Am An Aquifer!

This activity will encourage students to think about the different soil layers under the surface of the earth in terms of their particle size, weight, and porosity.

Students pretend to be wildlife biologists in this activity as they observe the devastating effects of an oil spill and attempt to clean feathers of a marine bird contaminated in oil.

This experiment will introduce students to the concept of euthrophication using plant fertilizer and a fish bowl containing aquatic plants.

Solution to Pollution

Students become water droplets, plants, and rocks in order to simulate the effects that plants have in preventing erosion and watershed pollution.

Something Fishy Going On

Students will test the pH levels of various common household substances to determine where they lie on the pH scale. They will then see how pH affects aquatic life.

Take the pH Challenge

Students test the pH levels of various substances (e.g. juice, vinegar, toothpaste etc) and relate their findings to aquatic habitats.

Students will build their own miniature terrariums to observe the water cycle processes of evaporation, condensation and precipitation. They will collect data, by recording their observations over time, so as to understand changes as part of the water cycle.

Students will compare the weights of common fruits in their regular and dehydrated states to determine the proportion of water in each. Students will also have the opportunity to determine how much of their bodies are made up of water.

When I Was A Child

Students will listen to a poem about a child’s sensory experience of the elements while in a canoe, and then respond to it by answering questions, or performing other activities.
