Objective of the Program

  • Provide safe, secure short-term housing for a maximum of one year for up to twenty families who have been staying in emergency shelters or without appropriate housing.
  • Families will have an opportunity to obtain resources and develop skills that will enable them to integrate into the community and sustain independence.

Background

  • In May 1999, the Final Report from the Peel Regional Task Force on Homelessness was released. Its underlying theme was to support people experiencing homelessness and to enable them to integrate in the community.
  • Following through on the recommendations from the Task Force a community-based Family Housing Work Group was formed to work with Regional staff to develop the framework for the Families in Transition project.
  • This project is now known as Angela’s Place and opened in July 2005.

Implementation

  • Staff are committed to empowering families in transition to improve their quality of life, by providing the opportunity to learn and grow through life management programs and one-on-one supports. Families must be motivated and prepared to accept assistance.
  • Supports include:
    • employment services
    • educational training
    • housing
    • budget counselling
    • parenting classes
    • anger management
    • life skills training
    • counselling

    • psycho-social education.
  • Children also attend programs and recreational activities including:
    • a homework club
