Reduce Poverty

Area of Focus: Living

Outcome: Increased income for Region of Peel residents, particularly those of lowest income

Measurement:

  1. Percentage of eligible families receiving appropriate entitlements, and
  2. Number of contracts awarded with Community Benefits Agreements.

Importance

According to 2011 tax-filer data, 17% of Peel residents are living in poverty. Poverty is associated with negative health and social outcomes. In order to take steps to reduce poverty during this Term of Council, the Region of Peel is seeking ways to ensure that low income Peel residents receive the benefits they are eligible for and applying a Community Benefits Model which will embed socially beneficial initiatives into public infrastructure contracts (e.g. hiring local low-income residents, buying locally, etc.).
