Water Smart Indoors
Bathroom
- The bathroom is the largest water consumer in the home about 50%
- The toilet represents nearly 30% of all water used in the bathroom
- The shower, bath, and faucet combined consume about 20%
- Tips to help reduce water consumption in the bathroom
- Get to know your toilet!
Tips
to help reduce water consumption in the bathroom
- Do not use the toilet as a wastepaper basket-needless flushing wastes water
- Turn off the water while lathering in the shower, washing hands, brushing teeth, or shaving
- Take a 5-8 minute shower instead of a 20 minute shower
Show You the Savings?
- Regular toilets waste as much as 20 litres (4.4 gallons) per flush
- Low flow toilets on the other hand can efficiently flush a bowl using only 6 litres (1.3 gallons) of water. (View our Peel-Approved list of efficient toilets)
- Undetected leaks can waste several hundred gallons of water per year and can easily be stopped by replacing or repairing fixtures
- Install a toilet displacement bag into the toilet tank. The amount of water the bag holds is the amount of water that is saved during each flush
- Switch to a low flow aerator that will use less water, such as one with a 1 - 1.5 gpm (gallons per minute) flow
- Switch to a low flow showerhead. Average showerheads expel 9.5 L per minute (2.5 gallons) while a water efficient showerhead uses only 6.6 L per minute (1.75 gallons) without a decrease in water pressure or performance
