Leaks & Drips

  • Water leaks add up to a considerable amount of lost water
  • Leaks and drips are a needless waste of water
  • Water lost from leaking faucets is not used for anything purposeful
  • Leaks can be stopped and often with little effort, time, and money
  • Most leaks occur in showers, taps and toilets
  • A faucet that drips one drop per second wastes 32.7 litres of water per day. That's a total of 981.2 litres of water per month and 11937.9 litres wasted per year.

How to Check for Leaks

Leaks

Read Your Water Meter
Use the water meter to check for leaks in your home. Turn off all faucets and water-using appliances and take a reading on your water meter. Keep water off for approximately 30 minutes then take a second reading. If the dial has moved, there is a leak.

Leaky Toilets The toilet is the most likely place to find a leak. Checking for leaks can be quick and easy. The basic visual test involves placing a dye tablet into the toilet tank and waiting half an hour. If after this time the dye appears in the bowl then a leak is present. Replacing the flapper can generally eliminate such leaks.

Leaky Faucets
Other places to check for leaks are the sink and bathtub faucets. Replacing the rubber "O" ring or washers inside the valve can usually repair dripping faucets.
