Water Smart Outdoors
Following some basic outdoor water saving tips can greatly decrease the unnecessary use of water.
You'll not only save money on your water bill, but you'll also help preserve the natural environment.
Outdoor Water Saving Tips
- Applying too much water to your lawn leads to shallow roots, making it easier for pests and weeds to grow. Apply only a half inch of water twice a week to keep grass healthy.
- Watering mid-day increases evaporation, causing less water to reach roots. Water before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. to increase the amount of water absorbed.
More Tips:
- Disconnect the downspout from your roof and use a rain barrel to collect rainwater for the garden. Be sure the rain barrel is equipped with a mesh screen to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.
- Aerate the lawn in the spring to allow water to reach grass roots and retain organic material.
- Select drought tolerant plants for your garden
- Grasscycle by leaving the cut grass on your lawn after mowing.
- Place mulch and bark around the base of shrubs and trees to help retain moisture.
- Compost! It adds organic content to the garden and allows the soil to retain more moisture.
- Wash the car with a sponge and bucket, and sweep driveways and patios, instead of using the hose.
- Water Wise Wednesdays is the one day of the week when Peel residents and businesses are encouraged to avoid watering lawns and gardens. Participation helps protect our environment and water supply.
