Water Wise Wednesday
Frequently Asked Questions

Sunflower

What is Water Wise Wednesday?

The day of the week when all of us in Peel - residents, businesses and institutions - are encouraged to practice water-wise habits outdoors and to refrain from watering our lawns or gardens.

Sunflower

When should we observe Water Wise Wednesday?

We should all try to save water year-round, but the most important time to conserve water is the summertime - between May 1 and September 30.

Sunflower

Who should participate in Water Wise Wednesday?

Everyone! If you have a lawn or garden, we encourage you to take part. Not watering one day of the week will not hurt your lawn or garden. Even if you don't have a lawn or garden, you can practice water-wise habits indoors.

Sunflower

Why Wednesday and not any other day of the week?

Wednesday is one of the most critical days of the week for refilling our water reservoirs. If we all refrain from watering on Wednesdays, our reservoirs will be allowed enough time to refill for the weekend.

Sunflower

What are the benefits of Water Wise Wednesday?

Reservoirs have time to replenish, energy is conserved, less strain is placed on the natural environment, and a we have a raised awareness of water as a precious, natural resource!

Sunflower

Is Water Wise Wednesday considered a water ban or restriction?

No, following Water Wise Wednesday is voluntary. Peel does not have permanent outdoor watering restrictions; however, there are many residents who would willingly participate in water conservation all summer long.

Sunflower

If it's voluntary, why would I want to participate?

Water Wise Wednesday makes good environmental sense. Just like recycling, people participate because they want to take responsibility for the environment. It takes no effort at all to take part!

Sunflower

If I participate in Water Wise Wednesday, does this mean no water bans this summer?

Water Wise Wednesday, as part of Peel's water efficiency strategy, helps protect us against temporary outdoor watering bans.

Sunflower

What should I do if I see my neighbour watering on Wednesday?

Not everyone has heard of our initiative and educating an entire community about water conservation takes time.

Visit our Website at www.watersmartpeel.ca and share your knowledge! If you feel uncomfortable talking to your neighbours about their Wednesday watering, call the Region of Peel at 905-791-7800, extension 4409 and ask us to send some literature on Water Wise Wednesday and Peel's water efficiency program to them.

Sunflower

I saw a business/government building watering on Wednesday - who should I call?

If you see a business or a government building watering on Wednesday, call the Region of Peel at 905-791-7800, extension 4409. We'll be happy to send them some information on our initiative.

What's a lawn and garden consultation, and how can I have one done at my home?

A team of two will assess your lawn, garden, and watering habits; provide advice specific to your yard; and answer your questions on water-wise gardening. Visit our Lawn and Garden Consultation page for more details.
