Resource Summary

Idle-Free Driver Awareness Blitz

  • An Idle-Free Driver Awareness Blitz educates drivers on the City of Mississauga's Idling Control By-law and how an idling vehicle contributes to climate change and poor air quality. During a Blitz, students and/or school staff provide education to drivers at your school during peak idling times. In most cases, this is before and after the final bell when most cars tend to be idling on and around school property. Students or staff would approach any drivers on the roadway or around school property and speak to them very briefly (30 seconds) about vehicle idling; and provide them with an educational "mock" ticket which gives some facts about the City's by-law to encourage them to be idle-free.

Before the blitz, observe and record driver behaviour around the school  over the course of one week using volunteer parents, your school's green club, or a class of senior students, in addition to teacher supervision. Create your own data collection sheet and document observations such as  how many cars are present; how many are idling; how many are not idling; and any other observations on driver behaviour. Also keep track of the weather conditions as this can sometimes impact driver behaviour. This can be done several times over the week so that you can get a really good idea of how many parents idle their vehicles at the school. The best time to do this is when idling is most likely to occur - at the end of the school day.

After the one-day Blitz, repeat the week-long exercise above to see if the number of idling engines outside your school has decreased or if there have been any other changes in driver behaviour.

This program will provide your students with hands-on experience with data collection and analysis.

The City of Mississauga will provide mock-tickets for use during the blitz.
