Always working to improve

Best Practice Spotlight Organization logoWhat is a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO)?

BPSOs are healthcare and academic organizations selected by the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO) to use, test and evaluate its Best Practice Guidelines. Peel Long Term Care was one of four long-term care providers in Ontario selected to be the first to implement the guidelines as a designated BPSO.

What Best Practice Guidelines have been implemented?

With support of the RNAO expert mentorship and consultation on the Best Practice Guidelines and because of the intense work of nurses and the interdisciplinary team members from various roles and departments, Peel Long Term Care has successfully implemented a number of Best Practice Guidelines across all five Long Term Care Centres. Peel Long Term Care will continue to implement and spread Best Practice Guidelines in 2021, to ensure quality and safe resident-centred care for our residents.

Watch this video highlighting our BPSO journey.

The Best Practice Guidelines that Peel Long Term Care has implemented include:

  • Assessment and Management of Pain
  • Prevention of Falls and Fall Injuries in the Older Adult
  • Person- and Family- Centred Care
  • Preventing and Addressing Abuse and Neglect of Older Adults
  • Intra-Professional Collaborative Practice Among Nurses
  • Risk Assessment and Prevention of Pressure Ulcers
  • Management of Pressure Injuries for the Interprofessional Team

Throughout the pandemic, we have been training Best Practice champions to work with our teams to implement quality improvement initiatives, that will continuously improve the lives of people living in our long term care homes.

In 2021, Peel Long Term Care will start to implement the revised Best Practices Guideline called Preventing Falls and Reducing Injury from Falls, 2017.

Peel Long Term Care homes will continue to sustain all previous Best Practices Guidelines and implement quality improvement and resident safety initiatives related to skin and wound care and falls prevention.
