Region of Peel announces the retirement of Stephen VanOfwegen, Commissioner of Finance and Chief Financial Officer

Brampton, ON (November 23, 2020) – The Region of Peel announces Stephen VanOfwegen, Commissioner of Finance and Chief Financial Officer, has shared his intention to retire as of April 30, 2021. His last day in the office will be March 5, 2021.

Stephen’s long and successful career in public service began in 1985 when he joined the Region as a Finance Officer in Peel Living. He moved into progressively senior roles, leaving the Region briefly to join York Region, and then returning to Peel as the Manager of Finance for Health Services. He has remained dedicated to the Peel community ever since. He became the Director of Business & Information Services for Health Services in 2004 and the Director of Business and Financial Planning in 2009. Stephen has been the Region’s Commissioner of Finance and Chief Financial Officer since 2014.

“I would like to sincerely thank Stephen for his excellent leadership skills and dedication to sound financial management during his many years with the Region of Peel,” said Janice Baker, Chief Administrative Officer for the Region of Peel. “Stephen’s tenure with the Region has coincided with Peel’s rapid growth in population and economic expansion, and throughout this time, he has ensured the Region remained fiscally responsible and financially sustainable. The Region has also consistently maintained a Triple-A credit rating under Stephen’s leadership – a standing held by only twelve municipalities in Canada.”
