Region of Peel celebrates Pride in Peel

Brampton, ON. (June 25, 2020) – To celebrate Pride in Peel, the Region of Peel has raised the rainbow flag at 10 Peel Centre Drive, 7120 Hurontario St. and at all Peel Paramedic Stations. Flags will be raised from June 25 to July 31.

In many cities across the nation Pride celebrations take place in the month of June. In Peel, Pride week takes place July 5-11.

The rainbow flag began as a symbol representing LGBT social movements. Now it represents the fight for inclusion and acceptance for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and two-sprit (LGBTQ2S) communities. Peel has a strong and vibrant LGBTQ2S community. Pride celebrations recognize individuality and uniqueness, diversity and inclusion.

While a flag raising ceremony was not held, to maintain physical distancing during the COVID response, Regional Chair Nando Iannicca made remarks and acknowledgements in Regional Council. “This is a time for compassion, learning, understanding and inclusion. We must become an ally, connect with, and take time to learn more about the LGBTQ2S community and other marginalized groups.” said Chair Iannicca.

We are proud of Peel’s diversity and are committed to building an accessible and inclusive community where all Peel residents feel a sense of belonging and where the needs of our diverse community are met. Residents are encouraged to take time to learn about the LGBTQ2S community and the issues and struggles they face.
