Joan Russell
Athlete
Mississauga has a proud history of producing great softball players.
As a teenager, Joan Russell played for the Streetsville Streets from 1952 to 1954. The Streets were an intermediate team of the Toronto Township Softball Association, and often played against the Dixie Dixies, the Port Credit Ports, and the Lorne Park Lornes.
In 2021, Janet Leung and Natalie Wideman, both from Mississauga, played on the Canadian Olympic softball team, bringing home a bronze medal. It was the first time a Canadian team had ever won a medal in Olympic softball.
