Pegi Nicol MacLeod (1904-1949)
Artist
Born in Listowel, Ontario, MacLeod’s education in the arts began at the Ottawa Art Association and later at École des Beaux-Arts. Her early artistic output was dominated by landscapes, mainly of Ottawa and Montréal. In her early summer travels to New Brunswick, she founded, and was a teacher at, the Summer Art School at the University of New Brunswick.
Regardless of medium, MacLeod’s work is characterized as colourful and with loose curving lines. Her subjects changed as she was continually inspired by what was around her, the busy cities where she lived, gardens, and later her daughter Jane. MacLeod's works in PAMA's collection show her loose and expressive style and are varied in the subject matter.
During the Second World War, MacLeod was commissioned to paint the Women’s Division of the Canadian Armed Forces. She worked to show their experience as fully as possible.
