Recruitment Testing: Process Overview

STAGE 1 - Written Exam (click)

PRPS will be holding a written exam on February 1st, 2020. In order to receive an invitation to register for the exam, candidates must provide proof of the following:

  • Diploma in Ambulance and Emergency Care OR be a graduate from an approved Ontario Primary Care Paramedic training program/equivalent OR have a pending graduation date no later than May 1st, 2020
  • Valid "F" class license or equivalent


Questions on the exam fall under four (4) main categories including:

Ministry Standards, Guidelines & Acts

Content focusing on the following:
  • Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Basic Life Support Patient Care Standards (BLS PCS) version 3.2- September 3, 2019
  • Ontario Ambulance Documentation Standards version 3.0, Patient Care and Transportation Standards version 2.2, Prehospital CTAS Paramedic Guide version 2.0 December 31, 2016

Medical Directives

Content focusing on the following:
  • Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Advanced Life Support and Patient Care Standards (ALS PCS) version 4.6.1 October 23, 2019


Content focusing on the following:
  • Pharmacological theory and specific application, drug classifications/identification, medication interactions, pharmacodynamics/kinetics and medical math

Pre-Hospital Science

Content focusing on the following:
  • Anatomy and Physiology, Pathophysiology, ECG Interpretation, etc.

STAGE 2 - Interviews (click)

This exercise is approximately 60 minutes in duration and follows the Multiple-Mini Interview (MMI) process

STAGE 3 - Practical Testing (click)

Candidates who are successful in the interview process will be invited to practical testing. This phase of recruitment will include a scenario circuit. This exercise involves a number of short scenarios covering a wide range of patients/ pre-hospital situations. The entire exercise will be approximately 2 hours in duration.

STAGE 4 - Driver Testing (click)

Candidates who are successful in practical testing will be invited to a road test. Please be advised that this driving assessment will be completed outdoors in an ambulance. Following the road test candidates will submit all HRI documentation (SEE DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS section).

Documentation Requirements

Please ensure that all of the following medical, physical and legal documentation is complete prior to the due dates mentioned below.

Candidates are solely responsible for the timely submission of all documentation.

Candidates should be prepared to submit electronic copies and/or produce physical ORIGINAL documents at any time.

Candidates may be eliminated from the recruitment process at any stage for failure to submit requested documentation.

Physical Testing: Candidates must submit a Physical Agility Assessment completed by Ottawa Paramedic Physical Abilities Test (OPPAT) in order to be eligible to participate in practical testing or accept a conditional offer of employment. OPPAT Tests must be completed no earlier than Sept 30th, 2019. OPPAT Test results dated prior to this are no longer valid.
Due Date: Stage 3 - Practical Testing

Medical Documentation: (Health Questionnaire & Paramedic Recruitment Influenza Declaration 2019 & Influenza Educational Review).
Due Date: Stage 4 - Driver Testing.START EARLY!!!!!!

HRI Checklist: Ensure that you have all documents outlined on the checklist (HRI Checklist 2020).
Please see and read the HRI FAQ’s as they will should answer any questions pertaining to the HRI Check list for 2020.
Due date: Stage 4 – Driver Testing.

Criminal Record Check: Must be dated within 45 days of Drivers Testing date. Vulnerable Sector Checks dated Prior to February 10th, 2020 will not be accepted.
Due Date: Stage 4 - Drivers Testing Date.

*NOTE - Some Municipalities require a signed Criminal Record Request form from the Region of Peel. Please determine whether your local Police Department requires this form, and if so, you can pick one up at the written exam. Processing time for Vulnerable Sector Checks vary between Municipalities. Check with your local Police Department and plan accordingly.

March 3rd – 12th, 2020: Practical Testing
(successful OPPAT Assessment Submitted on day of testing)
March 26th – April 1st, 2020: Driver Testing and Documentation submission
(All Medical, Legal and Checklist Documentaion is due at your assigned Test Time)
