Summary of Facts

  • Of the 1.4 million people living in Peel in May 2016, 49.1% were male and 50.9% were female.

  • Of the GTA’s 6.4 million people, 48.5% were male and 51.5% were female.

  • The median age in Peel was 38.1 years, the lowest in the GTA. Peel’s median age has increased by 1.2 years from 36.9 in 2011.

  • Females had a median age of 39.1 in Peel, while Males had a median age of 37.0.

Children

  • In Peel, the population aged 0 to 14 accounted for 18.3% of the population, down from 19.7% in 2011. In the GTA, the population aged 0 to 14 accounted for 16.7% of the population, down from 17.5% in 2011.

  • Peel had the second highest proportion of population aged 0 to 14 in the GTA.

  • Mississauga’s population aged 0 to 14 accounted for 16.8% of their population, while in Brampton this group accounted for 20.3%, and in Caledon they accounted for 18.6%.

  • From 2011 to 2016, the population aged 0 to 14 grew 5.2% in Brampton and 4.5% in Caledon, while it declined 6.1% in Mississauga and 0.5% in Peel. The population aged 0 to 14 grew 1.1% in the GTA.

Seniors

  • In Peel, the population aged 65+ accounted for 12.8% of the population, up from 10.5% in 2011. In the GTA, the population aged 65+ accounted for 14.7% of the population, up from 12.8% in 2011. Peel had the lowest proportion of population aged 65+ in the GTA.

  • Mississauga’s population aged 65+ accounted for 14.1% of their population, while they accounted for 11.2% of Brampton’s population, and 13.2% of Caledon’s population.

  • From 2011 to 2016, the Population aged 65+ grew 30.2% in Peel, 24.9% in Mississauga, 39.6% in Brampton, 27.2% in Caledon, and 21.4% in the GTA. Peel had the second highest growth in population aged 65+ in the GTA.

  • In 2016, there were 200 centenarians (aged 100+) in Peel, up from 115 in 2011.
