Sanitary sewer replacement and improvement

Hassall Road. Project 18-2252 G

The Region of Peel has been working in your neighbourhood to replace the existing sanitary sewer system on Hassall Road. Sanitary sewers are underground pipes that carry wastewater from your home to a wastewater treatment plant. Wastewater is created when water is flushed down the toilet, or goes down the drain in your sink, tub, or shower.

New sanitary sewers have now been installed on Hassall Road. The next phase is to replace existing wastewater service pipes from the property line to the new sanitary sewer main.

The wastewater service pipe carries wastewater from your home or business to the Regional sanitary sewer system. We typically only replace or reline the portion of the pipe within the Regional right-of-way leading from the property line to the new sanitary sewer, as it is the homeowner’s responsibility to maintain the portion of pipe on your private property.

The contractor will need to dig a trench to install the new wastewater service pipe. If obstructions like trees or utilities prevent the replacement of the wastewater service pipe, we may need to reline the pipe instead of replacing it. To access the wastewater service pipe for cleaning and relining, we may need to dig a hole approximately two metres by two metres in size, close to your front property line.

Any damage caused by Regional construction will be repaired:

Schedule

We expect to start replacing the wastewater service pipes on Hassall Road around October 31, 2022. We expect to complete this work by November 9, 2022.

Once we have connected all properties on Hassall Road to the new sanitary sewer, we will start repairing driveways, roads, curbs, sidewalks, and sod (grass).

Please note that repairs may be delayed due to contractor availability or weather conditions.

For example:

All work is under warranty for two years from the completion date.

Contractor and working hours

The work will be completed by TUI/Machina Construction under contract to the Region of Peel. This contractor’s normal working hours are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday. These hours are consistent with the local municipality’s bylaws. We understand this may cause some temporary inconvenience, but shorter working days would require your neighbourhood to be under construction for a longer period of time.

Odours

If the location of tree or utilities prevent the replacement of your wastewater service pipe, we will reline your wastewater service pipe and notify you at least 24 hours before the relining work begins. If your wastewater service pipe is relined, you may smell some odours while the synthetic resin inside the pipe cures. These odours are temporary and will dissipate within a few hours. You can prevent or minimize these odours by making sure you have water in all of your drains, including your basement floor drain. We recommend pouring a bucket of water down the floor drain and running the water in all sinks, showers, and tubs for a minute, either the evening before or day of the relining work. If your wastewater connection pipe will be relined and you are not able to put water down your floor drain (for example, if it is currently covered by flooring), we strongly recommend making it accessible before relining work begins to reduce the level of odours in your home.

Safety during construction

Construction zones require extra caution to keep everyone safe – pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and construction workers. When driving, walking, or biking through the construction area, please be aware of your surroundings, watch for construction crews and other road users, slow down, account for delays, and consider other routes if possible.
