  • Study of Transportation for Persons with Disabilities

    APPENDIX III
    2004 ACCESSIBILITY PLAN

The Region of Peel conducted a Transportation Study for Persons with Disabilities to determine existing and future travel needs of people with disabilities within the Region of Peel. To develop a clear understanding of the existing travel needs of persons with disabilities in Peel Region and how these needs will change in the future was an important initial step in the study. Understanding existing needs of clients and preparing the organization to understand and plan for the future needs of its clients were the compelling reasons to conduct this regional study.

Recognizing that just like the general population, persons with disabilities travel by a variety of different modes, the Region consulted with many individual and group stakeholders, who indicated there are still significant unmet travel needs within the Region. Due to the projected future growth in the aging population within the Region and to comply with the ODA the study focused on the development of long term service plan to meet the anticipated growth in travel demand by persons with disabilities. The study was conducted over a ten month period under the supervision of a Project Team of Regional and municipal staff. On April 2004, the Region published the Study of Transportation for Persons with Disabilities. This report summarized the findings of investigations over a period of several months.

The study report also included options and recommendations to meet the transportation demand of clients with mobility disabilities using different means of transportation available in the Region of Peel. In support of improved transportation services for persons with disabilities, a number of key transportation related policies are also being incorporated in the Regional Official Plan Strategic Update (ROPSU) section on Human Services. (See Appendix VI for the list of policies).

A copy of the study report can be obtained from the Planning department at the Region of Peel.
