Biography of
Janette Smith
Janette Smith, Commissioner of Health Services since September 2005, provides leadership for the strategic and operational aspects of the Health Services Department, including Long Term Care, Paramedic Services and Public Health. She oversees approximately 2300 staff and a combined operating and capital budget of over $220 million (2010 budget).
During her 21 year career with the Region, Janette has been a champion for improving the health and safety of the residents of Peel. She has held a number of progressive leadership roles including Director of Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention and Director of Long Term Care, before moving into her current post. Janette works with senior health leaders throughout Peel to ensure Regional health services are well-integrated into the local health system and facilitate joint policy development and partnerships. She was instrumental in expanding the Region’s Long Term Care centres from three to five and achieving a three-year accreditation for all five homes from the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation. She also managed the Smoke-Free bylaw initiative, which included industry consultations and partnerships with the area municipalities, City of Toronto and York Region.
Janette sits on several committees, including the Mississauga Halton Local Health Integration Network Integration Advisory Committee; the Peel Youth Violence Prevention Steering Committee; William Osler Health System’s Community Partners Task Force; and the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Applied Health Sciences Dean’s Advisory Council.
Janette holds a Master of Health Science degree in Community Health from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Science in Health Studies from the University of Waterloo. |
