Food and Beverages - Making Healthy Food Accessible

Introducing a Meal Program - Breakfast Programs

Research shows that children who start their days off well-nourished learn better and display fewer behavioural problems in the classroom.

The Breakfast for Kids program in the Region of Peel helps schools and communities develop and maintain universal, non-stigmatizing breakfast and snack programs. Their community development approach considers the unique culture and needs of each program.

Support provided includes:

  • Training and support for volunteers (nutrition guidelines, food safety, volunteer recruitment, quantity food orders and local fundraising).
  • Offering some food and supplies via the Boys and Girls Club Food Bank
  • Offering some start up funds and equipment
  • Distribution of funds from the Ministry of Children and Youth Services (up to 15% of food costs).
