Introducing a Meal Program - Special Food Days

Schools are always looking for healthy menu ideas for Special Food Days.

  • Sliced turkey or veggie submarine sandwich on whole wheat bread, container of milk, and fresh fruit
  • Veggie pizza, container of milk, and canned fruit (packed in own juice)
  • Grilled cheese (less than 20% M.F.) sandwich on whole wheat bread, veggies and dip, and yogurt drink
  • Chicken and veggie whole wheat wrap, milk pudding and water
  • Cultural food from a local restaurant (e.g., curry with rice, stir-fry veggies and noodles or pasta and tomato sauce), yogurt and 100% fruit juice tetra box

Healthy food items to add to Special Food Days
Schools can purchase the following items in bulk at warehouse prices to complement "Special Food Days" (e.g. Sub day, Pizza day). Keep in mind healthy portion sizes too.

  • Yogurt tubes, cups and/or drinks
  • Cheese strings
  • Whole grain or baked crackers, graham crackers
  • 100% dried fruit snacks
  • Canned fruit (preferably packed in its own juice or a light syrup)
  • Applesauce
  • Baked tortilla chips and salsa
  • Bagel chips or pita puffs
  • 100% fruit juice
  • Water, plain or flavoured
  • Milk, plain or flavoured (chocolate, strawberry etc.)

Did you know...

Fruit and yogurt parfaits are a great healthy addition to a Special Food Day. Contact a local provider or make your own: layer vanilla yogurt with cut-up fruit. Add some granola to the top.
