Physical Activity at School - Encouraging Physical Activity

Intramural Programs

Intramurals increase student’s physical activity levels since all children regardless of their ability can participate in fun games, activities and sports. Participation will increase self-esteem and confidence and may help students develop skills needed to play competitively.

Steps for Developing an Intramural Program

Step 1: Set a goal for the program. This helps with evaluation.

Goal examples:

  • To increase the number of students participating by the end of the program.
  • To increase the number of students who join the school's athletic program by the end of the year.

Step 2: Determine the schedule

Step 3: Ask student leaders to help organize and run the program

Step 4: Consider financial resources and create a budget

Step 5: Develop permission forms

Step 6: Promote fairness and safety

Step 7: Celebrate participant success and achievement

Step 8: Evaluate your program (participation levels and feedback from students and staff)
