Cold Weather Guidelines

Extreme cold weather is hard to predict. We can help stay healthy and warm if we prepare ourselves properly for extreme cold weather.

REMEMBER, it is important to treat cold related injuries. If you have frostbite or hypothermia, call your doctor. In an emergency, call 911.

The Region of Peel may issue a cold alert when the weather suggests a risk to human health.

The Health department has developed a cold alert system that is specific to Peel Region. The custom-made system was developed based on specific meteorology as well as urban structure and demographics of the region. This system is based on research that assessed how weather conditions and extreme cold have affected the health of Peel residents in the past.

When there is a risk to the public’s health, a cold alert may be called. During an alert more protective actions are recommended. For example, during an alert time outdoors should be limited.

The public and agencies serving the public are advised to refer to the safety guidelines for what they can do to protect health during extreme cold episodes.

The alert advisory is updated daily during business hours. After hours information can be found on our website or by calling Peel Public Health at 905-799-7700.
