
20/20 The Way to Clean Air
The Region of Peel, Public Health invites you and your students to participate in 20/20 The Way to Clean Air and help support the government of Canada’s One Tonne Challenge. The Challenge encourages people to reduce their green house gas emissions by 20% per year.
What is 20/20 The Way To Clean Air?
- it is an environmental program
- it encourages residents to reduce home energy use and vehicle use by 20%
- the purpose of the program is to improve air quality and reduce the impacts of climate change in our community
Benefits of the Program include:
- lower home energy and transportation costs for families
- reduced pollutants that contribute to smog and climate change
- reduced negative health effects associated with smog
- increased physical activity for children
What is the 20/20 EcoSchools Planner?
- the EcoSchools Planner is the main resource of the program
- it provides practical, hands-on activities and simple tips that assist students and their families in reducing energy use at home, and on the road
- as a “take home” guide, the Planner helps students make the connection between what they learn in the classroom and their everyday behaviours
How does the Program fit into the Ontario Curriculum?
- the program links to the Science and Technology component of the Ontario Curriculum
- it is particularly relevant to teachers giving lessons on resource and energy use, environmentally friendly transportation, atmospheric science, health education and the environment in general
Who is participating in the Program?
- residents and families in Peel and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA)
- many schools in the GTA
Resources/Incentives for Participating Schools, Teachers and Students:
- a free 20/20 EcoSchools Planner for each student in each participating classroom
- an attractive wall hanging for each participating classroom
- a 20/20 school banner for each school that has 3 participating classrooms
- entry into a monthly draw for a pizza lunch for each participating classroom
- a chance to win a school presentation on “Clean Air” delivered by a Clean Air Champion (Olympic and National Team athletes)
Resources/Incentives for Students and their Families:
Each participating student/family will be entered into a prize draw with a chance to win one of the following prizes.
- a front end loading washing machine
- a Raleigh Ocelot Bicycle
- a home energy audit
