Dental Screening for Kids

The Peel Public Health Dental Program for children offers the following dental services:

In order for children to enrol in the Peel Public Health Dental Program, they must first be screened to determine if they are eligible for these dental services.

  1. A dental screening involves a visual check of the child's mouth by a Region of Peel registered dental hygienist.
  2. The dental screening will determine if your child is eligible for the Peel Dental Services:
    1. Emergency and Essential Services Stream
financial help for kids in need of urgent dental treatments
    2. Preventive Dental Services
dental cleaning, pit and fissure sealants, and professionally applied topical fluoride

Where can my child get a dental screening?

Dental screening is provided at the child's elementary school or at a Peel Public Health Dental Screening Clinic.

School dental screening

Peel Public Health offers FREE dental screening in schools to students aged 17 and under in select grades. Your child's school will inform you when the dental screening is happening and if you DO NOT want your child to be screened, please call 905-799-7700 extension 5622 before the scheduled dental screening in school.

What is a school dental screening?

  • A Registered Dental Hygienist will take a quick look inside your child's mouth.
  • A separate, sterilized mouth mirror is used for each child.
  • Identifies children who may be in need of emergency and/or essential care or preventive dental services.  If your child is identified a form will be sent home and eligible children will receive dental services under Health Smiles Ontario.
  • A dental screening does not replace regular dental visits.
  • If your child missed the dental screening or you have other children who are not scheduled at school, you can call Peel Public Health at 905-799-7700 to book a dental screening appointment.

Contact your child's school to find out when Peel Public Health will be visiting for dental screening.

Preventive Dental Services

Preventing tooth decay is very important to your child’s overall health. Preventive dental services help prevent dental problems and keep teeth healthy.

It’s important that all children have the opportunity to know how to maintain healthy teeth and gums. Dental care can be very costly, and not all families have dental insurance or access to preventive services.

Preventive services are provided by Region of Peel dental staff to those children who qualify.

Children aged 0-17 living in the Region of Peel must first receive a dental screening at one of Peel’s Public Health Dental Screening Clinics to determine if they are eligible for these services.  Preventive services are free to children in the Region of Peel who qualify.

Qualifying for preventive dental services

Children may qualify for the preventive dental services if:

  • They lives in Peel.
  • They are between 0-17 years of age.
  • The cost of going to the dentist is too expensive for the family.

Preventive dental services for children:

  • Include dental cleaning, pit and fissure sealants, and professionally applied topical fluoride provided by a Peel Public Health registered dental hygienist.
  • Include information on proper brushing and flossing and healthy eating provided by acertified dental assistant.
  • Are currently provided at various clinic locations and on the Mobile Dental Clinic.
