Alcohol is a depressant that acts on the central nervous system by slowing down brain functions.

It's the most commonly abused drug in our society and its effects can be very serious. It's often the first drug that teenagers experiment with.

Effects of short-term usage

  • Sense of well-being
  • Giddiness
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Impaired judgment
  • Reduced coordination
  • Slurred speech
  • Vision is blurry or impaired
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Short-term memory loss
  • Alcohol poisoning
  • Death from lowered heart rate and breathing.

Effects over the long-term

  • Stomach ulcers
  • Liver disease
  • Certain types of cancer
  • Increased tolerance
  • Physical dependence.
