Whether it's investigating a food establishment or checking the quality of drinking water, there's never a dull moment in the day of a public health inspector. They routinely inspect food establishments, including restaurants, bars and supermarkets for overall sanitation, food handling, storage and preparation. Inspectors also investigate food-related illnesses and take part in the recall of contaminated foods. Those are the main components of the Food Safety program.

Through the course of their work, they are often asked many questions relating to these issues. Here is just a sample of some FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions) to which they respond:






Food Safety

  • How can I find if a restaurant in the Region has been inspected, or the results and condition of a food premise?
    • You can begin your search for information by calling a Public Health Inspector at Peel Health at 905-799-7700.
  • What are the latest statistics on food poisonings in Peel?
  • How do you report a suspected food poisoning or make a complaint concerning a food premise?
    • Suspected food poisoning can be phoned in to Peel Public Health at 905 799-7700 during regular business hours or emergency after hours service is available after 4:30 pm and on Saturdays, Sundays, and on all statutory holidays.
    • Complaints involving food premises and food poisonings are investigated by Public Health Inspectors.
    • Leftover food from any suspect meal should be kept refrigerated. It may be required for possible laboratory analysis.
  • How can food allergy reactions be prevented in a restaurant?
