Non-Profit 'Green' Group Receives Appreciation Award
(Brampton) - Greencase (Green Community Action for a Sustainable Environment), a non-profit community-based environmental group operating in the Town of Caledon, was honoured today by the Region of Peel with an Award of Appreciation for the design and maintenance of a perennial and found-object garden located at the Caledon Public Waste and Recycling Depot.
"The Region of Peel Waste Management Division is thrilled to be honouring Greencase for their outstanding volunteer efforts," said Larry Conrad, Manager, Landfill Operations. "Both the staff and the volunteers have a great deal to be proud of. In full bloom, the garden is beautiful," added Marolyn Morrison, Regional Councillor and Chair of Public Works Committee.
Originally started by staff at the Caledon Waste and Recycling Depot, Greencase offered their services three years ago. The two partners have been working together to expand the garden and have utilized both compost and recycled items from the Caledon facility to enhance the garden's look.
"The staff is great with watering and salvaging items such as rocks and other found-objects," says Greencase volunteer Cynthia Hyland. "The garden itself is located in a rather unforgiving position, so we have selected plants that re-seed themselves easily. Compost from the Region of Peel's composting program has definitely contributed to the plants' hardiness and the garden's beauty."
