NEW REGION OF PEEL INTERIM COMMISSIONER
OF SOCIAL SERVICES APPOINTED
(Brampton) - Peel Regional Council today appointed David Szwarc as Interim Commissioner of Social Services, effective immediately.
In leading the Social Services department at the Region, Szwarc will oversee the operations of three large service delivery divisions: Ontario Works In Peel, Children's Services and Transhelp. In addition, he will serve as a member of the Corporation's Senior Management Team, working with Chief Administrative Officer Roger Maloney and Peel Regional Council.
"David has served as the Region of Peel's Director, Ontario Works, since April 1990, providing leadership and direction to more than 300 employees within Ontario Works," said Maloney.
"He has been responsible for delivery of financial assistance, family court and employment programs and ancillary community services, and together with Paul Vezina and the division's leadership team, David has been instrumental in creating a service that is recognized by the Provincial Government as being a leader throughout Ontario."
Szwarc, 47, holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Queens University, and has over 20 years of experience in the delivery of social service programs.
"I am honoured by this appointment and would like to thank Regional Council, Chair Kolb, Roger Maloney and Paul Vezina for their support," said Szwarc. "I would also like to thank the employees of Peel Social Services and Ontario Works staff in particular. Working with this fantastic and dedicated team has been an inspiration to me and I am looking forward to the new challenges this position will bring."
Maloney said that the term, Interim, will be in place throughout 2001 until the Commissioner of Social Services, Paul Vezina, retires as of December 31, 2001.
"This allows a smooth transition within Peel Social Services, and the Region will benefit greatly from new projects that Mr. Vezina will be able to oversee for the Corporation as he gradually shifts his focus throughout this year. I greatly appreciate the support of Regional Council in approving this transition," said Maloney.
"There is no question that in David Szwarc we have a proven leader and innovator and I know that Regional Council is very pleased to make this appointment," said Peel Regional Chair Emil Kolb. "There are significant challenges ahead for all our human services as we work to address the impacts of growth of 28,000 new residents each year and as we work together to find solutions to funding and service delivery. We are confident that David will continue the success he has had in Ontario Works as he takes the reins of the entire department."
"David has over the past 10 years shaped a new and highly responsive service with a dedicated and motivated staff," said Vezina. "I could not be more pleased to see Council make this appointment, and I know that we will work together to make the most of 2001 as a transition and building year."
