Peel Health Volunteers Are Worth A Mint

(Brampton) - Peel Health volunteers continue to lead all health units across the province in the number of support hours they provide to their community and the value of work they perform.

In a report released today to Regional Council, Peel Health revealed that volunteers contributed 82,981 hours to the delivery of important Peel Health programs and services in the year 2000. This work has been conservatively valued at almost $1 million.

A recent survey of Public Health Units also revealed that Peel Health's volunteer program is the largest and longest running in Ontario.

"Peel Region volunteers have been important community advocates for health and an invaluable human resource since 1978," stated Dr. David McKeown. "Our community is stronger and healthier because of the passion and dedication our volunteers bring to our programs."

Last year, approximately 855 volunteers donated their time to a wide range of activities, including the new baby clinic, breastfeeding peer support, community food advisors, in-home family visiting, long-term care facilities, prenatal health fairs, the Heartmobile, the Water Festival and many more. By assigning a conservative value of $12 per volunteer hour, Peel Health has calculated the net value added to its programs as $995,772.

The Peel Health Volunteer Resources Program works to match the skills and interests of each volunteer with the needs of individual programs. Peel Health is committed to the long-term development of its volunteers by providing personal growth opportunities, ongoing support, supervision, evaluation and recognition.
