Regional Staff Wins Managed Competition Contract for Roadside Grass Cutting and Litter Pick-Up in Caledon

(Brampton) - Regional Council today approved the awarding of the contract for Roadside Grass Cutting and Litter Pick-Up for the Caledon area to the Region of Peel staff. This is the second bid awarded under the Region of Peel's Managed Competition process.

The winning bid was submitted by Region of Peel employees for a three-year period to cut grass and pick up litter on 265 kilometres of Regional roads. The value of the winning bid totals $422,827 and amounts to a savings of $91,353 over three years for the Region. The savings were achieved through a partnering arrangement with the Town of Caledon and new innovations in the equipment used to carry out the work.

"I'm pleased with the partnership we have developed with the Town of Caledon to provide this very important service," says Mitch Zamojc, Commissioner of Public Works at the Region of Peel.

Managed Competition is "a process where a public agency bids for the right to deliver a well-defined package of services over a specified period of time." In Public Works, this means that various functions performed by Public Works staff and contractors will be put through the Managed Competition process. Public Works staff have the opportunity to submit proposals and bids to perform the work, as do outside organizations. In addition, staff have the opportunity to bid on new work that the Region has an interest in performing to provide better service to residents.

"Our Public Works department is committed to providing the highest quality services at a reasonable cost," says Zamojc. "We have worked hard to ensure a fair and equitable evaluation system for our Managed Competition bids, and this time our employee bid was successful."

The next Managed Competition activity will be a contract for bin haulage, which will close in July 2001.

"We strive to be leaders in the Public Works industry, and our Managed Competition process helps us achieve this goal," says Zamojc.
