Monoprints and Collages by Louise Laroche at the Peel Heritage Complex
(Brampton) - Louise Laroche's work reflects a sense of timeliness and the artist's affinity toward ancient cultures. A collection of her monoprints and collages is on display at the Whitney Gallery located at the Peel Heritage Complex from September 28 until November 18, 2001.
Laroche, who was born in Quebec but currently resides in Brampton, started printmaking at Joshua Creek Studio in Oakville. Laroche's work which is being presented at the Gallery was inspired by the land and has an emphasis on colours, shapes and textures. The artist calls her collages "totems" because of their vertical shape and storylike content.
"In each of my series I develop different aspects of the same image. Up to four prints can be pulled from one plate," says Laroche. "Each image is different because of the many layers of crayons which create unexpected colour and textural changes. Sometimes, the print is kept untouched. Other times the plate is printed over black ink stick drawings, giving it a new dimension."
Laroche gets ideas for her work from nature and from the manipulation of materials. She often works intuitively, having only a vague idea of what the outcome will be.
Laroche has participated in numerous regional juried and group shows and received several awards. She has had solo exhibitions in Quebec, New York and Toronto. Laroche's work is in many private and corporate collections both in Canada and abroad.
