Statement from Regional Chair Nando Iannicca regarding the provincial announcement related to the Regional Government Review

BRAMPTON (October 25, 2019) – Today, the provincial government released information related to the Regional Government Review on eight regional governments and Simcoe County. This announcement means that the Region of Peel will continue providing excellent services to Peel residents and businesses.

I am pleased that the Province is committed to partnering with municipalities without pursuing, in their words, “a top-down approach.” The provincial government reaffirmed its commitment to working in partnership by providing municipalities with up to $143 million to find efficiencies and deliver “effective and modern services that best meet the unique needs of their residents”.

I commend the Province for conducting a thorough analysis during the Review and share my gratitude for the exemplary leadership shown by Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark and the Premier of Ontario, as well as the Special Advisors. My view of this welcomed outcome is that it serves as a pause to allow us all to continue to work together to drive efficiencies towards less government and bureaucracy – a path for which I commend the Premier and his government.

As Minister Clark mentioned, “municipalities are the level of government closest to the people.” In Peel, we know our community well and understand the needs and challenges of residents and businesses. For over 40 years, the Region has worked in partnership with the local municipalities of Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga, as well as the Province, to ensure that residents and businesses receive excellent services.

It is time to strengthen these partnerships and continue making improvements. On behalf of the Region and the residents of Peel, I look forward to working with the Province, Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga, along with our many partners on creating a stronger and more prosperous Community for Life.

The Region of Peel works with residents and partners to create a healthy, safe and connected Community for Life for more than 1.5 million people and 175,000 businesses in the cities of Brampton and Mississauga and the Town of Caledon. Peel's services touch the lives of residents every day. Recognized as a leader in management and service delivery, the Region of Peel is the only government organization at any level to receive Excellence Canada's Platinum Award for Excellence, Innovation and Wellness®.
