Statement from Regional Chair Nando Iannicca: Peel will not be dissolved in 2024

BRAMPTON, ON (Dec. 13, 2023) – Today, we received notice from Municipal Affairs and Housing, Minister Paul Calandra, that Peel will not be dissolved and that the mandate of the Transition Board will be recalibrated to focus on options to support building more housing faster.

We welcome the news that Peel will continue, and look forward to understanding the new scope of the Transition Board and working diligently with them and other experts to identify efficiencies that generate value for taxpayer dollars.

The full announcement today also covers several other Provincial initiatives such as how Minister's Zoning Orders are enacted, changes to the definition of Affordable Housing, and other key initiatives including that municipal audits, including Peel's, will be terminated.

We will continue to work with the Province to deliver services in the most efficient way, at the best cost to taxpayers.

I am thankful for the dedication of staff from Peel, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, and the local municipalities, in participating in the process. I am thankful that the Premier and Minister recognized that Peel works well and we have work to do going forward.

2024 will be Peel's 50th anniversary. This has been a tumultuous time for us, one of the toughest in Peel's history. We have faced many challenges in our history, and these challenges have made us stronger. I know we have a positive future and we will continue to serve with pride for years to come, building a Community for Life, here in Peel.
