Peel Region celebrates 50 years of incredible service

BRAMPTON, ON (January 11, 2024) – Today at Council, Peel Region kicked off the year-long commemoration of Peel’s 50th anniversary. Since being incorporated on January 1, 1974, Peel has grown to be one of the largest municipalities in Canada servicing 1.5 million residents and over 200,000 businesses in Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon every day.

Over the years, Peel Region has become an anchor institution in the community. Our rich history of servicing those who live, work or visit Peel is filled with experiences, innovations, accomplishments, strong partnerships and community connections.

From our early days, Peel has delivered services such as public health, long-term care, water, sanitary sewers and waste collection over a large geographic area, with an initial population of just over 300,000 people. In 50 years, Peel’s programs and services have grown significantly to respond to increasingly complex and changing environment and to enhance the community’s health and safety, social and cultural development, infrastructure and transportation systems. Relentless efforts for improvement have helped Peel become one of the most efficiently managed municipalities in Canada and a model for service delivery.

Today and into the future, Peel Region remains committed to serving the community in a way that is responsible, transparent and accountable. We will continue listening closely to what our community needs and expects, ensuring services and programs are responsive to those needs. This year, Peel will be celebrating our big milestone by showcasing our rich history of essential services and the great work and dedication of our employees.
