The State of the Environment (SOE)
Atmosphere Report 2002 is the first
report in a series of five reports
to be completed in the 2002 - 2004
timeframe. Building upon topics
initially examined in the 1995
SOE Atmosphere Report, one in
the initial series of three SOE
reports, the 2002 Atmosphere Report
explores air quality and atmospheric
issues in Peel Region, and examines
national and global environmental
issues such as climate change from
a Peel perspective.
For your convenience, two versions
of the Atmosphere Report 2002 have
been produced: a Summary Report
(69 pages) and a Technical Report
(162 pages) which provides more
in-depth information. Printed copies
of the Summary Report and compact
discs containing the Technical report
are available from the Planning
Department. The Summary Report is
also available in pdf format, by
section, through the links below.

Why should you read this report?
Poor air quality and atmospheric
issues affect us all. In Ontario,
and particularly the Greater Toronto
Area, smog days have become commonplace
in summer months. Representative of
poor air quality and heightened levels
of air pollution, smog can have negative
effects on both human and environmental
health. Recent studies by the Ontario
Medical Association warn of the health
threats of pollutants such as ground
level ozone. As this SOE report illustrates,
this type of ozone is frequently present
in our air, and is responsible for
poor air quality over 93 percent of
the time in Peel. It is an alarming
reality that these pollutants often
collect in even greater concentrations
in indoor areas. In Ontario, approximately
1,900 people die each year as a result
of air pollution, 1,000 of those In
Toronto alone.
Many of the health and environmental
effects of air pollution are preventable.
