What is an Excess Load Moving Permit?

An Excess Load Moving Permit is a permit for companies wanting to move oversized loads that exceed Ministry of Transportation accepted limits by height, length, width or weight; or for those companies wanting to travel on a road which is indicated as a Half Load Restriction (half the normal regulated weight of the Highway Traffic Act).

Required Lead Time

Annual and Modified Annual Permits

Applications for annual permits must be submitted a minimum of seven (7) business days prior to the required date to allow for permit processing.

The provided completed insurance certificate must be received with the application unless it is already on file. When required the applicant is responsible to forward an updated insurance certificate.

Application fees must be paid in full prior to final signature. Payment methods include Visa, MasterCard or a cheque made payable to the Region of Peel.

Single and Single/Multiple Permits

Applications must be submitted a minimum of five (5) business days prior to allow for permit processing. Single/Multiple permits can be issued for a maximum of one week period only.

The completed insurance certificate provided must be received with the application unless it is already on file.

Application fee must be paid in full prior to final signature. Payment methods include Visa, MasterCard or a cheque made payable to the Region of Peel.

Police Jurisdictions

  • North of Mayfield Road: Ontario Provincial Police (Caledon)
  • South of Mayfield Road: Peel Regional Police

Permits

There are four types of permits:

  1. Annual Permits
  2. Modified Annual Permits
  3. Single Permits
  4. Multiple Permits

1. Annual Permit

  • Application fee in the amount of $ 103.00
    (1-10 vehicles)
  • Application fee in the amount of $ 257.50
    (11 vehicles and greater)

This permit is valid for one year from the date of issue.

The dimensions are limited and cannot exceed the dimensional ranges below:

WIDTH:        2.6 m to 3.7 m

HEIGHT:     4.15 m to 4.5 m

LENGTH:   23.0 m to 25.0 m

Axle weight must comply with theHighway Traffic Act.

2. Modified Annual Permit (length only)

Is required when vehicle length dimensions exceed those stated for an annual permit and the company has frequent moves all year long.

A monthly schedule must be provided in advance of planned moves. Indicate date, time and route of all moves and inform the Region of Peel.

Revisions to schedule must be submitted a minimum of 72 hours in advance of move.

3. Single Permit

Is required when any vehicle dimension exceeds the annual permit limits.

Axle weight must comply with the Highway Traffic Act.

Applicant is responsible to provide full route within Region boundaries. Also a description of load and overall metric height, width, length and weight must be provided.

The necessity of police and/or pole escort will be determined by the Region of Peel.

Please note that single trip permits that begin on a City of Mississauga road either from a provincial highway and/or at the Mississauga border must be obtained from the City of Mississauga.

4. Single/Multiple Permits
(Maximum one week period only)

This permit is valid for multiple moves within a maximum one week period when the route is the same and all the dimensions are consistent.

Axle weight must comply with the Highway Traffic Act.

The applicant is responsible to provide the full route within Region boundaries and a description of load and overall metric height, width, length and weight.

The necessity of police and/or pole escort will be determined by the Region of Peel.
