School Bus Safety
School Bus Safety
Every day, over 800,000 Ontario students travel to school by school bus.
Most injuries to school bus passengers occur as students are entering or leaving the bus, or crossing the street.
The Region of Peel, in conjunction with Peel Regional Police and Ontario Provincial Police, is committed to keeping our children and community safe. Please practice safe driving.
Remember:
- It is illegal not to stop for a school bus when the red lights are flashing and STOP arm is extended
- Drivers must come to a complete stop in both directions when the roadway is not separated by a median and school bus red lights are flashing
- When approaching the front of the bus from the opposite direction, stop at a safe distance
- Stop at least 20 metres away when approaching a school bus from behind
- Do not start moving until the red lights have stopped flashing, the STOP arm folds away and the bus begins to move
Motorists who fail to comply with provincial bus safety laws will be fined. First offence penalties can be up to $2000 and six demerit points.
Help us keep our community and children safe.
