Traffic Control System Maintenance Program

To ensure the safe operation of the Region of Peel's traffic signals, the Region has implemented routine maintenance programs, performed in the spring and fall of each year. Each traffic signal is inspected and reviewed.

Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs)

The Region of Peel joined forces with the City of Brampton and the City of Mississauga to install LEDs in their existing traffic signals across the Region.

LEDs are installed at approximately 300 Region of Peel signalized intersections and flashing beacon locations. They are brighter, reduce energy use by 85 per cent, and help reduce annual maintenance costs.

LEDs will be installed for all new traffic installations.

Signal Progression

Traffic signal coordination is an important part of using existing roadways to efficiently move motorists and pedestrians throughout Peel.

Signals are grouped into networks to maximize road user efficiency. Traffic signals operating in conjunction with each other under the right circumstances provide more effective travel along Regional roads. The coordination of traffic signals is made possible by the use of central traffic control systems.

More Green Time

The Region of Peel takes a proactive role in maintaining signal timing.

Green time is divided between all directions at the intersection and is allocated based on volumes. If more green time is given to one direction or left-turn movement, then time is taken time away from another direction. Studies are conducted to see if this change will accommodate traffic approaching from all directions and not be detrimental to the whole intersection. Should you feel signal timing requires some adjustments, please contact us.
