  • Join the Celebration for International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The Region of Peel is proud to celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) on Tuesday, Dec. 2 from 1 – 4 p.m. This year’s theme, Dignity and Justice for all of us, highlights the importance of full and equal enjoyment of human rights and participation in society by persons with disabilities.

This year’s celebration will feature keynote speaker Shelley White, CEO of the United Way of Peel Region and a panel discussion highlighting Regional services and programs delivered to persons with disabilities. The AAC will also present Accessibility Awards to Regional staff, whose efforts have improved accessibility to Regional programs, services and facilities.

After the meeting, you are invited to visit information booths and displays set up to showcase products for accessible housing and Universal Design products, as well as services offered by Human Services and agencies in the Region of Peel.

Please register for the event by completing the RSVP form (PDF 53KB) and sending it to aac@peelregion.ca or via fax at 905-791-1693. If you are unable to attend, you can listen to the meeting through live audiocast through the Accessibility Website.

The United Nations-recognized International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is observed on Dec. 3 around the world and is aimed at mobilizing support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.

Accessibility continues to be an important Regional program and will remain a major focus for us as our community continues to evolve. The number of persons living with disabilities in Peel is expected to increase from 19 per cent to 33 per cent by 2031, mainly because of our aging population. Recognizing and eliminating barriers that exist within the Region of Peel is a priority as people with disabilities are entitled to the same rights, responsibilities and services as those without disabilities.
