Peel’s Regional Government
- In the 1960s, the Province of Ontario, along with Peel County Council, made recommendations for a two-tier system of government constituting of three lower-tier municipalities.
- The Regional system was developed under the premise that certain services are more efficiently administered over a larger area than an individual local municipality.
- On June 22, 1973, the Regional Municipality was enacted and 10 local municipalities amalgamated into three: the City of Brampton, City of Mississauga and the Town of Caledon
- The first election for local and regional councils took place on October 1, 1974. The Regional system became officially operational January 1, 1974.
- The Region of Peel is currently celebrating its 40th Anniversary.
The Organization
- The Region serves a population of over 1.4 million people.
- Comprised of the Cities of Mississauga and Brampton and the Town of Caledon, Encompasses 1,225 square kilometres in area (approximately 500 square miles).
