Adolescent Dating Violence: Current Issues and Practical Strategies
November 19, 2013
PeelThinkShare held a workshop with guest speaker Dr. Christine Wekerle from McMaster University on adolescent dating violence to discuss current issues and practical strategies for practitioners working directly with adolescents in Peel.
Resources and tools for practitioners seeking to understand and apply best practices in dating violence prevention were shared. The presentation also included many thought-provoking videos that practitioners can use to engage adolescents in dialogue and critical thinking about the messages they receive in the medial and pop culture about dating relationships. There are also sample screening tools for practitioners to assess whether an adolescent may be in an unhealthy relationship.
Dr. Wekerle is co-creator of a resilience initiative - the International Society for Child and Adolescent Resilience (www.is-car.ca), which can be followed on Twitter (ResilienceInYouth: http://twitter.com/ResilienceInYou) for evidence-based information on youth at-risk and resilience in youth.
