Bringing the outdoors in
In the later stages of dementia, it can be difficult to be outdoors as often as one might wish to be. When creating dementia friendly spaces, we look at ways that we can bring the outdoors in for everyone to enjoy.
Large, colourful murals with distinct floral patterns provide opportunities to connect with nature and offer visual interest towards an interior space for a person with vision impairments due to dementia. When creating murals, we consider where the eye gaze of a person may be directed; elements of visual interest can be added to ceilings and lower walls and floors to catch their attention and bring joy and vibrancy to their day.
Our enchanted forest at Sheridan Villa will take our approach to bringing the outdoors in one step further. This hallway will be a multi-sensory experience incorporating birdsong and water sounds during waking hours, and soothing evening sounds to help orient to nighttime routines.
