Excess load moving permits

Trucking and construction companies must apply for a permit to move heavy loads within Peel Region’s right-of-way.

Eligibility

To apply for an excess load moving permit, your company:

What you need

To apply for this permit, you need to provide:

  1. A spreadsheet list of all vehicles used that includes the:
    • Year of vehicle
    • Make of vehicle
    • Vehicle’s license plate
    • VIN (vehicle identification number)
  2. Your Insurance Certificate.
  3. The insurance certificate must name the Region of Peel, City of Brampton, Town of Caledon, and City of Mississauga as additional insured.

    It must also have the following coverage:

    • Motor vehicle liability insurance $3 million
    • Comprehensive general liability insurance $2 million
    • Total insurance $5 million

    Your insurance must meet the Region’s requirement of $5 million to be accepted.

  4. The correct route information for the move.

Fees

There are 2 fees.

1. Annual Permit

This is valid for 1 year from the date of issue.

Dimensions must be within the annual requirements below:

Length 12.5 m to 25m (including a maximum rear overhang of 4.65m)
Width 2.6m to 3.7m
Height 4.15m to 4.5m
Weight As per the Highway Traffic Act

2. Single Permits

Single permits are for one-time loads that exceed the maximum annual permit limits.

We accept payment by Visa or Mastercard, Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT), or a cheque made payable to “Region of Peel.”

How to apply

Determine which type of excess load permit you’ll need, then complete the Excess Load Moving Permit application form.

You email your completed form to Road Permits or mail or drop it off in person to:

There are 3 types of permits: Annual, Single, or Multiple.

Annual permit

An annual permit is for loads that are oversized in width, height, and length. The axle weight must comply with the Highway Traffic Act.

Load dimensions for an annual permit:

  • Width: 2.6 – 3.7 m
  • Height: 4.15 – 4.5 m
  • Length: 23 – 25 m

  • Applications may take up to 10 business days to process. Permits are valid 1 year from the issue date.

Single permit

A single permit is for one-time loads that exceed any one of the maximum annual permit dimensions for width, height, length, and weight.

The axle weight must comply with the Highway Traffic Act.

Submit your application documents at least 3 business days before the move date.

On the application, include:

  • The Regional road full route boundaries.
  • The overall width, height, length, and weight in metric units.
  • If you'll be exiting from a provincial highway (i.e., 401, 403, or 410) onto a City of Mississauga Road or at the Mississauga border, you must get your permit from the City of Mississauga.

    We will determine if you need a police escort during this move.

Multiple permit

A multiple permit is for 2 or more moves that are happening within a one-week period. The route must be the same, and all the dimensions of the vehicle must be consistent. The axle weight must follow the Highway Traffic Act.

Submit your application documents at least 5 business days before the move date.

On the application, include:

  • Regional road full route boundaries.
  • Overall width, height, length, and weight in metric units.
  • If you'll be exiting from a provincial highway (such as the 401, 403, or 410) onto a City of Mississauga Road or at the Mississauga border, you must get your permit from the City of Mississauga.

    We will determine if you need a police escort during this move.
