Health in the first year of life is a vital precursor to health in later childhood and adulthood. This chapter includes information on several aspects of infant health, including birth weight, stillbirths, congenital anomalies, infant and perinatal deaths, and breastfeeding practices. Peel data are compared with Ontario data in each instance. Injury-related mortality and hospitalizations during the first year of life are addressed in the injuries section of the chapter titled Early Childhood Health (see page 41).
