Lining the wastewater service pipes
Pioneer Drive, Andrea Court, Joymar Drive, Theodore Drive, Donata Drive, Isherwood Court, Joycelyn Drive. Project 16-2300 A 3B
The Region of Peel has been working in your neighbourhood to replace the existing sanitary sewer system on Pioneer Drive, Andrea Court, Joymar Drive, Theodore Drive, Donata Drive, Isherwood Court, and Jocelyn Drive. Sanitary sewers are underground pipes that carry wastewater from your home to a wastewater treatment plant. Wastewater is created when water is flushed down the toilet, or goes down the drain in your sink, tub, or shower drain.
At this stage of the project, we will be relining a portion of the wastewater service pipe which carries wastewater from your home to the sanitary sewer system. (We typically only line the portion of the wastewater service pipe within municipal property, as it is the homeowner’s responsibility to maintain the portion on private property.)
This work involves cleaning and lining the inside of the wastewater service pipe with a resin (plastic) and fiber material to extend the service life of this pipe.
This work will be completed by LiquiForce under contract to the Region of Peel.
Liquiforce will be making multiple visits to your street to investigate, locate and clean your wastewater service pipe:
- Once the wastewater service pipe is located and marked on your property, the construction crew will access your wastewater service pipe through the maintenance holes located on the roadway. The lateral will be cleaned of roots and debris, and then measured to build a tightly fitted liner.
- Once the lateral has been cleaned and confirmed for rehabilitation, you will receive a notice one week in advance of installation.
- On the day of the liner installation, a team member will knock on your door 30 minutes before installation work begins. They will remind you to minimize your water use for three hours while the repair work is underway.
- If you are not home during this process, the crew will post a work notice on the door of your home, stating that the work has begun. They will then mark the work notice as completed once our equipment is out of the wastewater service pipe.
Any damage caused by Regional construction will be repaired:
- If we have to dig up the grass to reline the wastewater service pipe, we will replace the sod (grass) in the disturbed area.
- If we have to dig up a section of your driveway to line the wastewater service pipe, we will repair the driveway by paving a strip over the disturbed area, resulting in minimal seams in the final driveway. If construction activities cause additional damage to the driveway, we’ll repair those areas too.
Construction schedule
We expect to start relining affected wastewater service pipes on these streets in March 2023. We expect to complete this work by the end of April 2023.
Once we have connected all properties on each street to the new sanitary sewer, we will start repairing driveways, roads, curbs, sidewalks, and sod (grass).
Please note that repairs may be delayed due to contractor availability or weather conditions.
For example:
- Paving cannot take place when the ground is saturated with water, or the temperature is below 3°C.
- Asphalt is not available in large volumes during the winter. Asphalt usually becomes available around mid-May.
- Most sod farms are located north of Peel. They usually have sod available beginning in late May. We will replace the sod on your property once it is available. We replace sod only until the middle of November, weather permitting, to let the sod grow roots. If we do not repair your lawn by the middle of November, we’ll replace the sod the following spring.
All work is under warranty for two years from the completion date.
Wastewater service interruptions
To complete this work, your wastewater service pipe will be out of service (plugged) for approximately 3 hours. (Wastewater service pipes carry wastewater from your home to the underground sanitary sewer system.) This temporary interruption allows for the pipe to be repaired without digging up the street. To advise you of the exact date and time of this service interruption, LiquiForce will provide you with a second notice at least 24 hours before the lining process begins.
It is important to minimize your water use while this work is underway:
- You may continue to wash your hands but minimize your water use.
- Do not use showers, bathtubs, dishwashers, or your washing machine.
- Keep toilet flushing to a bare minimum.
These actions will reduce the possibility of sewage backing up into your basement or into your plumbing. If you have a sump pump, please notify us at construction@peelregion.ca or tell the contractor when they arrive at your property.
Odours
You may smell some odours while the synthetic resin inside the sewer cures. These odours are temporary and will dissipate within a few hours. You can prevent or minimize these odours by making sure you have water in all of your drains, including your basement floor drain. We recommend pouring a bucket of water down the floor drain and running the water in all sinks, showers, and tubs for a minute, either the evening before or day of the relining work.
Safety during construction
Construction zones require extra caution to keep everyone safe – pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and construction workers. When driving, walking, or biking through the construction area, please be aware of your surroundings, watch for construction crews and other road users, slow down, account for delays, and consider other routes if possible. Learn more about how to stay safe in construction zones.
