Lakeshore Lofts, Mississaugaproject profile

Opened in 2022, Lakeshore Lofts is a third-party project providing supportive housing in south Mississauga.

In November 2017, Peel issued a request for prequalification to develop new supportive housing projects in Peel. Indwell Community Homes submitted a response to the proposal and nearly a year later was awarded the contract by Regional Council for new supportive housing in Peel Region.

Indwell was very involved with the Mississauga community throughout the whole development process for Lakeshore Lofts, holding meetings to receive input from residents and working with the community.

Jeff Neven, CEO of Indwell, said, “It was amazing to see the kind of support we received from the community for this project – there was no opposition.”

Construction began in November 2019 and wrapped up in early 2022.

A significant feature of Lakeshore Lofts is the energy efficiency it provides, following the Passive House standard, considered to be one of the most rigorous voluntary energy-based standards in the design and construction industry. By following this standard, Indwell is reducing greenhouse gas emissions which allows for lower utility costs.

“We design new housing to reduce greenhouse gases to support Peel’s Climate Change Master Plan, so energy efficiency is a high priority for us,” said Aileen Baird, Director, Housing Services.

Supporting the community

Supportive housing encompasses affordable and accessible residential accommodation that provides individual-based support and services so residents can live independently. This can include assistance with activities of daily living or medical care, and other community-based support.

“It’s exciting to be part of Mississauga’s first supported affordable housing program,” said Aileen Baird, Director, Housing Services.

Lakeshore Lofts also features The Compass on the first floor, a food bank and outreach centre for residents across the city to access a variety of programs and services including assistance with food distribution and spiritual and religious worship.

“We’re very humbled to be able to serve tenants with unique needs. It’s so rewarding to be able to provide resources and connect tenants with community health and wellness resources while knowing that they feel a sense of belonging at Lakeshore Lofts,” Neven said.

Importance of partnerships

Third-party led projects like Lakeshore Lofts are made possible by meaningful partnerships with government and community agencies.

“Lakeshore Lofts was built with the community in mind, and we’re so pleased we were able to work with Peel to complete this project,” said Neven.
